Introducing: Mitch Gallagher

Mitch Gallagher is a native of Maryville, MO but knew from an early age that he wanted to be a country music singer so he made the move to Nashville, TN and attended Middle Tennessee State University. While there a friend suggested posting covers of songs on YouTube and the rest is history. With his blue-collar work ethic and unique voice, the young independent singer/songwriter is quickly beginning to turn heads in Nashville after recently being accepted as a Recording Artist Member of the Country Music Association (CMA). I encourage you to follow Mitch on his social media sites: Facebook Twitter YouTube

When did you realize you wanted to make singing your career?
Singing has always been apart of my life. I grew up singing in church, as well as in choirs and at talent shows. I always knew that I wanted to make a career out of it one day, but it wasn't until I attended Interlochen Arts Academy for Vocal Soloist studies the summer after my senior year of high school that I knew how I was going to do it. I began songwriting there, and for the first time in my life I was surrounded by some of the most talented and dedicated young musicians in the world. Seeing their drive, passion, and focus on their music inspired me to finally make a change, and I decided then and there that I was going to move to Nashville, TN.

Who were some of your musical influences growing up?
Like many small town kids in the 90's, I grew up listening to a lot of mainstream 90's at the time. Singers like George Strait, Garth Brooks, Tracy Lawrence, Alan Jackson, Clay Walker, Sara Evans, Vince Gill were all some of my favorite artists. I have always had a huge appreciation for Keith Whitley, as well as many of the singer/songwriters like James Taylor, John Denver, and Jim Croce.

In 2010 you started posting covers on YouTube, How did that idea come about and were you surprised at all of the support you received?
When I first moved to town, my first couple of months here were pretty rough. I lacked direction, and I wasn't surrounded by people with the same ambition and goals as I was, so it was a really confusing time. Fortunately, I became friends with Addison Johnson and Tyler Barham. They both took me under their wing, believed in me, and showed me the way. Tyler has had a ton of success with YouTube, and convinced me to start posting covers, and the rest is history. I'll never be able to repay those two for all they've done for me. I'm just now over 317,000 views. I don't know if I ever thought that it would take off as much as it has, so i'm just thankful that so many people have taken the time to listen to my covers and support me. My ultimate goal is 500,000 views so i've still got some work to do!

How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as modern country with traditional country leanings. I'm absolutely in love with the fiddle, and i'm going to make sure that it is in every song that I ever record. My music is "Me", and whether it's an upbeat song, or a ballad, every song that I record is real and special to me in one way or another. My ultimate goal every time I play a show or someone listens to my albums is to move my listener in one way or another. I truly believe that if I have done that, I have done my job.

Who would be your dream collaboration?
If they were still alive, it would have been Keith Whitley and John Denver. They were both so heartfelt and real with their songwriting, and I would've loved to have had the chance to sit down and learn from both of them. Other than them, I would have to say Sara Evans without a doubt! Being from Missouri, she was such a huge influence on me growing up! She showed me that it was possible for a kid with a dream from small town Missouri to move to Nashville and have success in country music.

If you had the oppurtunity to write with any songwriters who would it be and why?
Kelley Lovelace without a doubt! I remember reading his book "If You Have A Dream, I have a Plan" before moving to Nashville, and hoping to meet him someday. Rhett Akins would be another, as well as Jon Randall.

What is your favorite part of the recording process?
I don't know if there is a certain part I like more than the other. The whole process as a whole is truly incredible. To watch a song that you wrote, come alive and become something is truly amazing.

Do you have any exciting plans for the rest of the summer and into the fall?
Mostly playing shows and writing songs. I'm fortunate to be able to go back to my hometown of Maryville, MO a couple of times this year and play shows, so I'll get a chance to catch up with some old friends and family members. Other than that, I am an avid sports fan, so I'm planning on going to a few St. Louis Cardinals baseball games, as well as a few college football games this fall!

What advice would you give someone trying to get into the music business?
I think the music business is a lot like anything else. It all begins with a dream. You have to truly believe in yourself, and know deep down that you are going to succeed no matter what the obstacles. Set goals and time frames to accomplish them in. Surround yourself with people that are better than you, and learn from them. Strive to become better at your craft and a better person each and every day. If you do all that, good things will happen.

What do you hope to be doing and/or accomplish in your career in the next 10 years?
I want to be a consistent Top 40 Billboard Country Artist, touring heavily across the country. My two biggest dreams are to perform at the Grand Ole Opry, as well as win CMA Male Vocalist of the Year. But more importantly, I just want to continue doing what I love for a living, and touch people with my music.

Memories from my trip to Nashville for CMA Fest 2014

CMA Fest week is the best week of the year especially for such a huge country music fan as I am. The festival is technically only the 5th-8th but my mom, her friend and I always go down early so I can attend events that are before the actual festival begins. I won't recap everything I did because lets face it no one wants to read all of that because it would take a long time so I will highlight a few of my favorites things I got to experience each day while I was in Nashville. If you ever have the chance to go then don't pass it up. It is one of the best weeks I have ever had filled with great friends & music in my favorite city. There is nothing better.

Single Review: More Than A Cotton Dress by Tyler Barham

I was first introduced to Tyler Barham and his music through a friend on Twitter. So one day I decided to check out some of his covers he had posted on his youtube channel as well as his original music on iTunes and from the first listen I instantly became a fan of his style & voice. He has one of the more traditional country voices which I think country radio needs more of.

A few days ago he released his latest single to radio titled More Than A Cotton Dress in an effort to swim against the tide of the current bro country trend which I consider a much needed and welcome change. The lighthearted, fiddle driven, summer song takes the current crop of cliche lines and cleverly turns them into something fresh and new. Barham even manages to make the obligatory reference to an iconic country music legend in the second verse.

'More Than A Cotton Dress' is currently featured in iTunes New and Noteworthy and is also available on Amazon MP3.

Q&A with Singer-Songwriter Colby Dee

I was first introduced to singer-songwriter Colby Dee through another singer-songwriter Aubrey Wollett who also happens to be Colby's best friend about a year ago through Twitter. From then on through corresponding on Twitter & Facebook I became friends with Colby. I am looking forward to meeting her in person next week when I am in Nashville for the annual CMA Music Festival. Her EP Missed The Exit is available now on iTunes. You can follow her on her social media sites: Facebook Twitter Instagram

What is your life motto or advice you live by and who gave it to you?

When I moved to Nashville I bought a ring that said "Nothing Is Impossible". I have worn that ring every day since. I love this quote and live by it.

At what age did you start singing and when did you realize you wanted to pursue it as a career?

I started singing when I was 7 years old. My first performance was singing the National Anthem at a professional hockey game. Singing for such a large crowd and hearing that big of a cheer at such a young age sparked the fire for me. When I graduated high school I knew that I wanted to really pursue this dream and make it my career. I moved to Nashville and have been working hard ever sense.

Who are some of your musical influences?

I grew up listening to Shania Twain a lot. I would say she was by far my biggest with music. But other artists that I love as well are Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood, and Michael Jackson! :)

Where do you draw inspiration from when you write songs and what is your favorite part about the process?

I draw from my own personal stories as well as friends and family situations. The beauty about writing music is I can tell any kind of story I want and writing with different people opens my mind each and every day. Some writing sessions are a venting session (aka: free therapy!) but in each write I learn something new. I am so grateful to be able to write music and share it with people.

What do you think are the biggest misconceptions fans have about being an artist and life on the road?

Being an artist and being on the road is something I will never  take for granted. I would never be able to do this without the support from my family, friends, and fans! However, there are days where it can be very lonely and you feel like you are missing out of some important things in your family and friends' lives. There are days when you doubt yourself and wonder if you are chasing something that will never happen. That's where my fans kick in and lift me up without even knowing and that's the beauty of this career.

Who are a few of your favorite country artists?

A few of my favorites would be Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum, and Miranda Lambert.

Who are a few artists you would like to go out on tour with given the oppurtunity?

Wow, that's a tough one because there are so many. I would love to go on the road with Lady Antebellum, Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Miranda Lambert...and that's just to name a few! They all seem like such fun artists and their tours are amazing!

If you could record a duet or collaborate with any artists who would it be and why?

Again, so many come to mind! Shania Twain of course or Garth Brooks!

Thank you again Colby for letting me interview you! :)

Album Review: Rewind by Rascal Flatts

Rascal Flatts may have titled their ninth album "Rewind" but the pop-country trio takes a step forward musically to stay relateable to country fans but at the same time keep their sound that fans have loved for the past 14 years.

On "Rewind" lead singer Gary LeVox, bassist-pianist-singer Jay DeMarcus, and guitarist Joe Don Rooney take a bigger hand in their production cutting more than half of the album on their own. Led by DeMarcus the trio moves the needle forward on the engaging "DJ Tonight", and the title cut, a recent country Top 10 hit.

The group also brought in pop veteran Howard Benson, who produced five cuts, including the dance floor ready, "Powerful Stuff". Old hand Dann Huff, who had produced the band since 2006, worked with the ground on the catchy "Life's A Song," which sounds more like the old Rascal Flatts. But what makes "Rewind" exciting is that Rascal Flatts has fast-forwarded into the future.

Overall I think Rewind is a great album with diverse sounds and an updated sound that is needed to stay relevant in the ever changing country music industry. A few of my favorite tracks on "Rewind" are Riot, Aftermath, Rewind, Life's A Song.

You can purchase the album on Itunes: HERE, Walmart & Walmart.com and the Deluxe Edition available is available at Target.

Single Review: Looking Back Now - Maggie Rose

'Looking Back Now' is the third single from Maggie Rose's critically acclaimed album Cut To Impress. It is the follow up to her singles "I Ain't Your Mama" and "Better", both of which made the Top 30 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts. "Looking Back Now" is the eight track featured on her Cut To Impress CD and it was written by Lisa Carver.

With the opening lyrics being "I probably should have let him run...." instantly sets the listener up for a mid-tempo tale of a woman who was fed-up with an alcoholic, lying, cheating husband enough to end his life. This is the kind of story song that Country music used to constantly have all over the airwaves but now it sounds like a deviation of sorts but that's by no means a bad thing. It is a refreshing change from the "bro-country" that has been dominating country radio. If anything it makes Maggie Rose's distinctive style stick out & be noticed more among all of the same sounding songs on country radio which is definitely a good thing.

"Looking Back Now" has lyrics that many women will relate to, at least in a fantasy realm but here it finds Rose narrating as the woman on death row paying for her own crime of taking her husbands life. There is a line that manages to rhyme "sodium theopental drips" into the final verse which is one of the more unique rhymes you're likely to find in all of country music. The melody supports the story with strong fills of fiddle and interesting echoes in places, all adding to the whole mystique of the single.

Maggie Rose's vocals on this new single are bold, melodic and infectious. They are reminiscent of country singer Kellie Pickler with the spitfire edge of Kimberly Perry from The Band Perry. Rose shows a lot of ranger on this track as I noticed the first time I listened to the track. She deserves to be the next Miranda Lambert or Carrie Underwood in country music.

I recommend checking out the single and her entire Cut To Impress album if you have not heard it. It is available on iTunes HERE. Also check out her official website, Facebook & Twitter pages. I will post links below.

My Top 10 Favorite Country Songs Right Now

As you may already know, I have been a country music fan for as long as I can remember. I love how relatable the lyrics to the songs are and how there is literally a song for however you may be feeling or whatever situation you are going through. Whether that situation be sadness, heartbreak, happiness, etc. So for this weeks post I decided to pick ten of my favorite songs right now. Some of them are on country radio while some of them are not but should be. As you will see most of my favorite artists are female although I do like my fair share of the guys as well. Country radio is filled with "bro-country" these days & I think it is about time we get back to the roots of country music which is storytelling beyond girls, trucks and beer. I will post a link to iTunes to purchase the songs.

1. Get Out - Sarah Davidson - Purchase Here
2. Pull Me Back - Leah Turner - Purchase Here
3. Looking Back Now - Maggie Rose - Purchase Here
4. Safe - Katie Armiger - Purchase Here

7. Clockwork - Easton Corbin - Purchase Here
